Tasty New Arrivals

A good group of wines last week, even though most were more serious then the hot weather might have permitted.

The Whites

The 2015 Brooks Amycas, the  Willamette take on the Alsatian blend of Riesling, Pinots and Gewurztraminer was the exception. Full of fruit, yet graceful and intriguingly complex, it pleased most people mightily. A great wine for the deck.

Most people really liked the I Clivi Ribolla Gialla, with its fresh strong and layered fruit and acids.

The 2015 Terredora di Paolo Greco di Tufo was a wine of great depth and structure complexity, suitable for serious food. It was divisive. Most people really liked it; some did not at all.

The Reds

2014 Caravaglio Nero du Munti• Corinto Nero, the single vineyard wine from the Lipari islands off Sicily, was controversial. It was a wine of pronounced character. The overwhelming majority of tasters really liked it. A minority found its ash-inflected acid drive too strong for them.

The 2014 Domaine d'Escarvailles Rasteau, on the other hand was a more majoritarian wine. It attracted a lot of likes, if not the enthusiasm for the Corinto. it's a solid big, broad  and drinkable Rhone, one that many thought would be good for the summer grill.

People  noticed the tannins in the other Rhone, the 2015 Domaine Font Sarade  Vacqueyras Les Hauts de la Ponches. It got credit for drive and structure but most felt that it might be for the better for the cellar than to drink now.
