This Week's Tasting:

The Riches of Languedoc: From the Ridiculous Value to the Sublime

June 19, 2013

Languedoc is a large swath of the French Mediterranean south between Roussillon on the west and Provence on the east. In the 19th century and through most of the 20th, it was the source of the lake of cheap thin piquette, whose generous daily ration anesthetized blue collar French workers against the tedium of their work, just as California’s Central Valley’s Two Buck Chuck dulls the palate of our middle class. Past Tastings

The Little Brut that Ranks with the Best...and its Big Brothers - June 5th

'Springtime in a bottle', one taster enthused about the Deutz Brut Rose. Most others were as appreciative if not quite so eloquent. Indeed it had an enticing fresh quality with an appetizing hint of strawberries and spice that enchanted most tasters.

Bin Ends Sale - May 29th

Some of the wines sold out at the tasting . We have no more of the Mas d’Alezon Faugeres, the Thevenot Lebrun Pinot Beurot, or Bartolo Mascarello Freisa. (We do have some of his excellent 2006 Barbera)

Chicken 'N Ribs, Wine Too - May 22nd

Peter writes: Last week the wines covered the various tastes and textures one may find at a New England BBQ. Len provided the proof with his very fine and secret smoked chicken and ribs. As to the wines, the white and the rose had fun with the chicken. The first two reds played nicely with both the chicken and the ribs. The last two reds were just for the ribs.

All Shades of Pinot - May 15th

The 2010 Domaine Schoenheitz Pinot Gris Holder had a combination of rounded apple acid zing & bright sweet fruit with an herbaceousness that was almost Riesling-like. Many people liked it a lot.

Rosés of All Hues - May 8th

The rosés were shades of pink and salmon & tan pink. They varied in style also. A number of people already knew 2012 Toad Hollow Eye of the Toad Dry Pinot Noir Rose . New comers to it were surprised by its crisp acidity.
