Lighter Reds for a Hotter Summer

Prior to the tasting we put last week's reds in front of an air conditioner. This brought them to the right degree of cool-not-cold for drinking on a hot day. Try this at home.

We did not, but in some cases should have, opened some of the wines ahead, as they got better over the course of the tasting.

The 2015 Glassier Schiava was so light in color that some people expected a thin rose, not the heady full cornucopia of herbs and fruit they got in the nose and mouth. Those who chose not to believe their lying eyes, thought the wine intriguing. We recommend it and drinking it eyes averted, to avoid sensory confusion.

The 2015 Domaine Jessiaume Bourgogne Pinot Noir was one of the tasting favorites for its balance and length, at a very reasonable price for burgundy. It is certainly a lighter style for spring through early fall drinking.

Both Beaujolais were good when first opened but got better with time. The 2016 Domaine de Capreoles Beaujolais Lantignie l'Amourgandise started hearty and full, and then softened into a very pretty, more richly styled Beaujolais. The 2015 Stephane Aviron Cote de Brouilly showed a smoother and more sophisticated interpretation. It seemed lighter and perfectly presentable at the start. I brought the tasting bottle to dinner that night. After four hours opened, it showed the Cote de Brouilly's granite character nicely balanced with fruit. it is great value at 18.99, the Capreoles is very good value also.

The 2014 Domaine des Huards Cheverny had a dense herbal overlay to its Pinot Gamay fruit that some liked and others didn't. Nonetheless the likes had it and bought all we had.

Many liked the 2013 Federico Ferrero Dolcetto Galea for its chunky richness and especially for its low price. Good with a variety of richer food  on the grill or not.
