Delicious Portuguese Bargains

Peter writes, "For last week’s tasting of great value wines from Portugal we saw two things right off. First was really lousy weather and second was a small but very enthusiastic group of tasters."
April 26, 2017

He continues,

We began with the 2016 Pinha Dao White. This is a blend of four grape varieties, principally Encizado which provides the richness and texture on the palate.  The 2015 Pinha Dao red is also a blend. Tasters commented that it could use some more breathing time, which when you think about it, is a pretty surprising comment for a wine of this price. These were both favorites.

And speaking of breathing, we next had the 2013 Adega Vila Real Douro Reserva which people thought was pretty closed and not showing much. It opened as the tasting went on but it was the next day when two customers went through the wines and thought this was clearly the best. Twenty four hour breathing? Why not.

The 2015 Maria Mora Alentejano Red had the richest fruit of the wines and also showed some spice. The last red was the 2015 Tinta Boa Lisboa Red. This was also rich and quite well balanced dry wine and earned the pocketbook favorite vote.

And just to have some fun we finished with the   2016 Ponte Loureiro Vinho Verde. Of the grape varieties allowed for Vinho Verde, Louriero is the best quality. This wine showed just the right zesty sparkle with bright citrus and apricot.

All in all this was a really nice tasting to introduce the concept that today Portuguese wines are actually really good, worth your attention and great value.
