"South-facing vineyards in a softly rolling landscape form an amphitheater bringing forth some of the best and most tradition-rich wines in Austria."
March 20, 2024

2022 Heidi Schrock & Sohne Furmint

Heidi Schrock took over her family winery in 1983 Burgenland about five miles from the Hungarian border. As Heidi explains "South-facing vineyards in a softly rolling landscape form an amphitheater bringing forth some of the best and most tradition-rich wines in Austria. Yearly hours of sunshine that lie much higher than average combined with sandy soils mixed with clay and high calcium content provide the ideal prerequisites for impressive, full bodied wines. Furmint is better known as the grape of sweet Hungarian. Heidi’s dry version Van Morrison's Astral Weeks in a wine - Creamy texture, vivid fruit, splashes of minerals, echoes of lime blossom, and a rush of fresh savory herbs will make you feel born again this spring. $37, Case, $32

2022 Georg Breuer Sauvage Riesling Trocken Organic

Founded in 1880, the winery has been owned by the Breur Family for over a century. Under the direction of current owner-winemaker Theresa Breuer it has gained the reputation of carrying on some of the finest winemaking in the Rheingau . that organic farming leads to pure expression of Riesling’s amazing breath and energy.

Dr bright pale yellow with green reflexes and primary aromas of apricot and lime. Lush and refreshing with a youthful acidity. An easy to drink dry wine. $26.99, Case 22.99

2022 Schlossgut Diel ‘Nahesteiner’ Riesling

The Schlossgut Diel vineyards, in the Diel family since 1802, are located in the lower Nahe on a steep-facing slope with old vines that lend a character completely unique to this place. Caroline Diel is now winemaker and proprietor. Her offerings are a study in both terroir and differences in intensity. Diel is one of the few who still vinifies each GG (Grand Cru) site at each Pradikat (level of intensity and/or sweetness). Thjs wine is luminous, spring-loaded and beautifully complex with peaches and apricots that dance alongside golden minerality. $29.99, Case $25.99

2020 Johanneshof Reinisch Estate St. Laurent

Started in 1923, Johanneshof Reinisch estate, just below Vienna, is now run by the fourth generation of the family: the three Reinisch Brothers. The level of precision that the brothers practice is incredible. Certified organic farming and moves into the cellar where this wine sees 50% French oak 50% Austrian Cask. The brothers select French Bordeaux barrels for their wine made from the Sankt Laurent grape. Pinot Noir fans love St. Laurent for its a silky texture, ripe raspberry, and plenty of warm inviting spice. Like all great wines of the world there is nothing quite like this. $23.99, Case $19.99

2020 Georg Breuer Spatburgunder

At the height of monastic dominance in the Rheingau, Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir) was revered as much as Riesling. Today this reverence continues as the southerly exposed vineyard sites, protected by the Taunus mountains, are a reliable source for great Pinot Noir. Along with great vineyard sites, Pinot Noir requires exceptional vintner's skill. Theresa Breuer succeeds with this Spatburgunder. Deep ruby red, with delicate aromas of wild strawberries and vanilla. The palate is framed by soft spice, lush savory fruit and ripe tannins. Well-balanced and elegant. $43, Case $36.99

2018 Weingut Prieler Johanneshohe Blaufrankisch Organic

The Prielers’ focus on Blaufrankisch has a long history in this part of Burgenland. Certified organic - the Prieler’s prune rigorously, plant cover crops, and pay meticulous attention to canopy management as their region receives so much sunlight. They make multiple, careful selections during harvest to control alcohol while still achieving physiological ripeness. Sourced from nine different parcels dominated by limestone, mica schist, and slate: the Blaufrankisch is fermented in stainless steel before being racked into barrel. A lovely Vino Nobile aroma, round, barky, rugged but not rustic, focused but not analog, the 2020 vintage has warmth but also shape and outline, and a really articulate pepperiness. $23.99, case $19.99
