This Week's Tasting

Super Wines, Super Sale **updated**
September 27, 2017

We were supposed to taste Pinot Noirs this week, but one of our suppliers offered us deals on over a hundred wines that they need to sell this week.

Some changes in our email from yesterday.

The 2014 Auvigue Pouilly Fuisse has sold out .

2013 Paul Hobbs Ulises Valdez Pinot Noir

2013 Paul Hobbs Ellen Lane Chardonnay

About 2 cases each are still available but they will not arrive in time for tonight's tasting

However we will taste another extraordinary wine:

2013 Chapoutier St. Joseph Granits Blanc

see below

2014 Matrot Bourgogne Blanc.

Was $26, Now $19.99, By the Case $16.99 - SAVE UP TO 34%

Thierry Matrot makes this at his classic Meursault classic estates. It is clean racy and pure like all his wines. Tasted twice, consistent notes: Aroma: appley, rather dense, spicy laden, sweet edge; Mouth: clean sweet bright acid rather dense, tight juicy clean; Very Good Plus

2015 Loosen Red Slate Riesling

Was $16, Now $12.99, By the Case $10.99 - SAVE UP TO 32%

This was a bargain at its original price. In the wonderful 2015 vintage it is dry and has the rich soft sweet mellowness that you get in the premium red slates around Urzig and Erden. It echoes Loosen's wonderful Erdener Pralat. This is super stuff at the price. Cases are coming home with me.

Color: Very pale; Aroma: Sweet intense and full red slatey fruit ; Mouth: Thick tight to start with rich fruit clean lower toned mineral good length; Very Good Plus

2013 Philippe Colin Chassagne Montrachet

Was $75, Now $49, By the Case $41.65 - SAVE UP TO 45%

This wine hit Alan Meadows (Burghound's) sweet spot; "A cool and ultra-fresh nose displays notes of petrol, citrus, pear and resin. There is excellent vibrancy and intensity to the utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors that deliver a balanced and lingering finish that possesses plenty of citrus character, in particular lemon zest. This is a very good Chassagne villages."

I liked it too :"Aroma: bright clean, firmly mineral, reticent apple refined more ; Mouth: clean fresh pretty fine acid, juicy bright firm finish, young, needs breathing or a year or two of age; Very Good Plus

2013 Chapoutier St. Joseph Granits Blanc

Released at $95, Now $59 NET - SAVE 38%

A Marsanne -based wine from one of the northern Rhone 's best. Very sensuous. Jeb Dunnock in the Wine Advocate: " showed brilliantly, and certainly doesn't appear to be a kink in the recent string of incredible vintages of this cuvee. Possessing an exotic, perfumed style, it gives up tons of white peach, caramelized citrus, brioche and orange marmalade, with more and more floral and exotic qualities with time in the glass. Full-bodied, ripe, textured and layered, with beautiful freshness, this is another blockbuster vintage of this cuvee not to miss." 20 bottles only

2013 Voerzio Barbera Correto

Was $45, Now $24.99, By the Case $21 - SAVE UP TO 54%

Roberto Voerzio's Barberas are as serious as his famous Barolos. Like those he 2013 Voerzio Barbera d’Alba Ceretto combines modern and traditional styles. It's moderately rich and balanced with just the right blast of acidity. Critics call it “utterly delicious”.

2013 Voerzio Barbera d’Alba Ceretto: Deep ruby. Combination of dark plum and cherry fruit with notes of pepper and hazelnut. The harmony of flavors, acidity, and spice is remarkable. Drinking now and for ten years. Very Good Plus to Excellent

2014 St Cosme Les Deux Albions Cotes du Rhone

Was $24, Now $14.99, By the Case $12.75 - SAVE UP TO 47%

We have always liked the extra richness and depth of Ste. Cosme's premium two-vineyard Cotes du Rhone blend. We think the 2014 will be outstanding value based on Jeb Dunnock's Wine Advocate notes "surprising density and depth of fruit in the vintage. Blackberries, currants, licorice, garrigue and pepper all emerge from this medium-bodied, sweetly fruited, charming, forward and delicious beauty. It will drink well right out of the gate."

2012 Guigal Cote Rotie Ch. D'Ampuls

Was $185, Now $89 NET - SAVE 52%

We are rubbing our eyes at this wine at this price. Guigal's Ch d'Ampuis Cote Rotie stands just below their $600 La Las's in quality. The 2012 is excellent. Jeb Dunnock in the Wine Advocate "offers full-bodied richness and a broad, expansive style on the palate. Black raspberries, toasted spices, cured meats and licorice all emerge from this incredibly sexy, complex and nuanced Côte Rôtie, and my notes finish with “wish I could drink a glass.” Enjoy bottles anytime over the coming 15 or more years."

Not in the tasting, but still a little left

2013 Paul Hobbs Ellen Lane Chardonnay

Was $75, Now $47, By the Case $39.95 - SAVE UP TO 47%

Robert Parker rated this wine even higher than the Hobbs Pinot Noir "a light straw color, a spectacular nose of honeyed peaches, caramelized citrus, and a steely, almost gravelly, Chablis-like quality to it. This wine comes from a very rocky site in the Green Valley, and its cold micro-climate has rendered a spectacular 2013 to drink over the next decade or more." Yum.

2013 Paul Hobbs Ulises Valdez Pinot Noir

Was $85, Now $49, By the Case $41.65 - SAVE UP TO 51%

We strongly recommended the 2014 at $90 until it sold out. According to Robert Parker the 2013 is just about as good: "extravagant black raspberry fruit, forest floor and spring flowers in a dark ruby/purple-colored wine that is full-bodied and opulent. This is a stunner."
