2014 Montevertine + 2015 Montevertine Pian del Ciampolo

Finest and Purest
October 13, 2017

The first email offer I ever put out from Federal Wine was for the 2001 Montevertine. I had known founder Sergio Manetti for many years and believed that at Montevertinehe produced the finest and purest expression of Sangiovese you could find. Today the wine is produced by his son Martino and winemaker Paolo Salvi with the exact same care and tradition.

Today’s offer is for the 2014 Montevertine and the 2015 Montevertine Pian del Ciampolo. The estate is in Radda in Chianti at very high elevation. In 2014 this was important because this position allowed Martino and Paolo to effectively deal with some difficult weather. Later on the weather changed and the grapes were harvested late after reaching full phenolic maturity. This is a wine of tremendous charm and elegance that will age well for fifteen to twenty years.

The 2015 Pian del Ciampolo is from a perfect vintage. There were essentially no problems at all. As usual, the Pian del Ciampolo is the “introductory” wine for the estate. Still it always has tremendous class and character and is a great value.

2015 Montevertine Pian del Ciampolo: Dark cherries, herbs, flowers and rustic tannins. Pleasant bite in the long finish. Very Good Plus to Excellent 33/bottle

2014 Montevertine: Once again the definition of elegance. Cherry, spice, flowers, bright acidity and incredibly silky tannins. Excellent 58/bottle

Special mixed case: Six bottles of each of the above for a special price of $464
