This Week's Tasting

Easter Wines
March 22, 2018

Peter writes, "Len asked me to come up with a couple of wines to go with ham and for some reason, I thought of Italy."

Easter Bunny

He continues,

He also asked that one of them be a white wine. So I thought what white wine would be light enough not to argue with the rich flavors and also have a profile to not be offended by sweetness and smoke?

If you want something very special, I suggest a wine I wrote up last week!

The 2016 Librandi Efeso made 100% with Mantonicograpes, an historic variety makes a late ripening variety producing wines of excellent phenolic maturity. Mantonico is very particular about the areas it will grow well, so production of this wine is limited.

I have loved this wine since the first time I tasted it 16 years ago. With the help of Paolo Librandi, I have finally convinced the importer to bring it back in. Since they make spicy food in Calabria, I can say that this is a great white wine to go with spicy food but it is perfect with many others too, ham for example. I can also say that this is the only white wine I have found that has saffron in its aromatic profile. The wine is medium bodied, complex and ridiculously satisfying.

We have 2 full cases left

For a red the single vineyard 2013 Allegrini La Grola has the class, structure and staying power of a premier cru Burgundy.

Len writes,

Rumor has it that some good wines might be made outside Italy. I guess they fall to Linsey and me.

Linsey's pick is from France's Loire Valley:

I specifically thought of this wine when brainstorming what would go great with your Easter meal. Sante!

The Gendriers farm organically in central Loire's Cheverny. Their 2016 Envol is, equal parts of Gamay and Pinot Noir, with a touch of Cab Franc. Grapes go directly into tank, gently pressed and ferment with native yeasts. This 2016 is fresh and bright.

But consider the ham, Pink juicy and delicious, sometimes adorned with a bit of sweet herbs, brown sugar or honey. What better could match it than something pink and fruity?

Bandol, in Provence makes wines that are big, broad and structured for roses and can improve with age. We were lucky to find this 2016 from Domaines Bunan, one of the classic producers.

Lastly, a heartier red, a solid and very well priced Syrah that Bill Easton, our favorite producer from California’s Sierra Foothills makes under his Terre Rouge label.
