Badia a Coltibuono ~ 2009 Sangioveto and 2011 Montebello
Library Release and A Brand New Wine
August 2, 2016
There are two reasons for this offer. Both revolve around the classic and historic Tuscan wine estate Badia a Coltibuono (Abbey of the Good Harvest). Badia is located in Monti in Chianti in the commune of Gaiole. This is ground central for the best grapes grown in Chianti Classico.
The first reason for this offer is to give you the opportunity to obtain a great wine with some bottle age. In addition to very fine Chiantis, for many years Badia has been making a wine with 100% Sangioveto grapes, the same clone of Sangiovese used to make Brunello. The 2009 Badia a Coltibuono Sangioveto is, as usual, a wine driven by terroir with full body and expressive aromatics. On my last visit to Tuscany in May I spent some time with Emanuella and this is one of the wines we enjoyed with our very fine lunch. She kindly offered to send a few cases our way from the Badia library cellar. These have now arrived. The wine is drinking well now and for the next ten years.
One of the other wines we had with lunch is the 2011 Badia a Coltibuono Montebello. This is the second reason for this offer. This is the first release of a very special new wine from Badia. The wine is a roughly equal blend of nine native Tuscan varietals. Emanuella said the winery produced this wine just for me, due to my long standing insistence that only native varietals can produce authentic Tuscan wines. The Montebello is a very limited production wine, only 300 cases made, and it is amazing. The grape varieties are Mammolo for its distinct violet aromas, Ciliegiolo for structure and depth, Pugnitello for spice, Colorino for color, Sanforte and Foglia Tonda for density and texture, Malvasia Nera for aromatics, Canaiolo for softness and Sangiovese for all of these characteristics. Drink 2016 to 2030.
Both of these wines are organic and natural. Both represent Badia's commitment to the quality and history of Tuscan wines. The Sangioveto is in the store now. The Montebello will arrive in about four weeks.
