2015 ByOtt Cotes Du Provence Rose

Amazing Bottle for a Special Occasion
March 21, 2017

By Ott bottle

At the tonier restaurants on the Riviera or their equivalents in the Hamptons or on others, the rose of choice is Domaine Ott's Ch. de Selles Cotes de Provence. Its popularity has made it extremely expensive and very hard to get. Last year only eight cases of six came to Massachusetts.

Ott's makes a more basic wine, By.Ott. Made to sell at $25 a bottle, it blends grapes from younger vines on the estate with purchased grapes to make a wine in the same style as the Ch de Selles. Last year the local importer had his allocation arrive late, so at the end of the season had some left over.

With the 2016s coming, he had to sell his 2015s. For that reason we are able to offer some cases of the 2015 at a greatly reduced price.

Many people think that you have to drink light roses young. Not necessarily so. Better made ones will improve for as much as a decade after bottling, particularly if they are of a good vintage like 2015.

We nonetheless tried before buying and last week discovered a wine that had shed its youthful hard acids to reveal a fleshy fullish wine, rounded and resilient. With a bit of time in the glass, it opens to a succulent fruit that is nicely underlaid by a mineral rasp, refreshingly counterpoised as a gin and tonic. It is a sophisticated rose at an everyday price.
