Roses of Different Hues

Rose in glass

Last week's good rose calls for another six. This week's cover a range of tints, flavors, and weights, from the lighter for sipping at the beach or backyard to richer versions good for food when it's too hot for red.

The 2021 Penya Rose is from Languedoc and is a nicely rich and crisp blend of Grenache and Syrah with excellent quality for its price.

Copain's 2021 Pinot Noir Rose is as good as its vaunted red. Bright and sprightly, it has presence and an herbal edge that flaunts its Mendocino origins.

Sancerre's Paul Thomas estate made an elegant pinot rose, softly sculpted, pretty, classic Loire pinot noir.

St Roseline is one of only eighteen classed growth estates in Provence. Its best cuvee is its distinctively bottled Medusa lamp. Grenache gives the blend richness and depth; Cinsault breed. It is extraordinary in the pantheon of Provence rose.

Robert Foley's Rose has finally arrived after a long wait. It is worth it. Substantial and herbal, a blend of Merlot, Cabernet, and Pinot Noir, it has both breadth and lift. Its intriguing complexity makes it a good companion to even steak or barbecue.

Provence's other principal Rose, Bandol, is imposing with the richness and spice of the Mourvedre grape. The 2020 Pibarnon has an angular structure that nicely frames generous fruit and herbal spice. It, too, is intriguingly complex and stands above many others in the region.
