Austrian Clarity with Italian Flair
Sub-Alpine Alto Adige is part of Italy, but until 1918 it was Austrian. To this day both German and Italian are spoken there. The region has a long, storied history of producing great wines particularly whites that are Austrian in style with an Italian accent.. Kellerei Terlan aka Cantina Terlano dates back to the 19th century and is known to be one of the best white wine producers in the world. Italian wine xxpert Nathaniel Greenspan will leading through a tasting of six of their whites.
We will begin with the 2024 Pinot Grigio just to show that you can make a good Pinot Grigio. Then we will taste the 2023 Pinot Bianco, a more serious and slightly richer wine. Then it’s Italy’s answer to White Burgundy, the 2023 Tradition Chardonnay with its round texture, orchard fruit, citrus and a hint almond.
One of Terlan’s guiding missions is to make whites with a great capacity to age. They maintain an extensive library selection at the winery. The next three wines all have this capacity to age. The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc Winkl is a dramatic and expressive wine now and gets more complex and tertiary with age. Put a couple of bottles away for ten years. The 2023 Terlaner Cuvee, a blend of Pinot Bianco , chardonnsy and a touch of Sauvignon Blanc, shows pear, apple and citrus with an underlying tropical component. Last is the 2022 Sauvignon Blanc Quarz offers a combination of fine texture, depth and salty aftertaste that has given this noble white an international reputation. Even in today’s ridiculously high speed world, see if you can find your way to put a few bottles of these down for several years.
