2024 BORDEAUX FUTURES

Bordeaux En Primeur 2024:

To Buy or Not To Buy

Bordeaux Villa

I have received the final pricing for the 2024 en primeur. I have removed the concern over having to pay a tariff on top of the quoted price. A tariff is not charged to the importer until the wine arrives at US customs in the country. The 2024 wines will not be available to ship from Bordeaux until sometime late in 2026 or in 2027 at the earliest. We have arranged with our negociants to store the wine in Bordeaux at no charge to our customers until a tariff is gone or minimal. Also, our listed price is fixed and will not go up or down with currency variations

I have split the 2024s into two groups. First are those Chateaux, for which I have a limited allocation available which can range from 6 bottles to 120 bottles. These are the best wines of 2024. If there is a wine you would like, it is my job to get it for you. You just need to ask.

The second group are those that I consider to be great value or "sleepers".

Allocated Wines

The  2024 prices are 15 to 50% lower en primeur than they were in 2022, making some, particularly the top growths, great value.

SECOND GROUP

The 2024 Bordeaux vintage was difficult and the wines are by no means uniform in quality. Each vineyard had to use their best technology to produce quality wine. Many top-quality producing vineyards had to be ruthless in deciding which grapes would be made into Grand Vin or 2nd Label and which would be discarded.

Bordeaux List

The following is a sample of some reviews on wines I consider to be of significant value and quality.

Allocated Wines

Chateau Carmes Haut Brion

Seamless and silky in the glass, with superb balance, the 2024 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is one of the wines of the vintage. All the elements are so well balanced, always a sign of a superior vintage at this address. Floral notes, spice, leather and mocha run through a core of layered, beautifully persistent dark red fruit. Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Chateau Figeac

Silky and aromatic, with velvety tannins, the 2024 Figeac is sublime. Floral and savory aromatics meld into a core of blue/purplish fruit, spice, licorice, lavender and menthol. All the elements are so well balanced. Not surprisingly, the 2024 is a very Cabernet-driven Figeac. Production is 60,000 bottles, or 50% of normal, because of low yields and further selection in the cellar. Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Chateau Montrose

Vivid deep colour in the glass. High acidity as well as sweet and sour fruit make the first impression - lifted and charming this has a fun personality while being structured and long. Fine tannins support the blackcurrant and chocolate elements and I love the licks of wet stone on the finish. A little charged, somewhat unusually for the vintage, but the concentration really works. Great texture and balance. Very impressive. Optical sorting. G. Hindle, Decanter

Ch. Troplong Mondot

A total stunner. The purity and intensity of the flavors are simply remarkable. Troplong Mondot is one of the standouts of 2024. Even in this vintage, Troplong Mondot possesses remarkable textural presence, but that richness is matched by notable freshness and linear drive. It was deeply impressive–Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Chateau Leoville Poyferre

Impressive texture, slate wrapped in silky tannins, with real depth of flavor, black cherry and damson fruit, no dip through the mid palate, and a long finish. Maintains estate signature, shows generosity and confidence, one of the wines of the vintage. Alix Combe vineyard director, Isabelle David oenologist. Harvest 24 September to 10 October. 3.71 pH. 26.42 hl/ha. Jane Anson, Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux

Chateau Laroque , super great value

Delicate and so refined. So pure and precise too in its red and then darker berry fruit signature – at first loganberry and raspberry, then mulberry and bramble. This is a little more nutty than Larcis, tasted just before. It’s fresher too and a little less sunny with a slightly darker berry fruit – a touch of loganberry too that is not present on the Côte Pavie. That renders this more taut and tense and that is reinforced again by the calcaire tannins that structure and sculpt the wine vertically. What is also impressive here is the layered viscosity – very rare in the vintage – which makes this rather special. With aeration there’s more and more blackcurrant and the fresh lift that brings – I’m almost reminded of Ribera from my childhood. A study in fruit purity and so brilliantly juicy on the finish. A lovely liquorice note too on the finish. Colin Hay, Drinks Business

Larger S Supply

Chateau Trotte Vielle , Sleeper

Pretty with that seamless core of very dark Cabernet Franc fruit (planted at 44% but always more present in the final wine) imparting notes of blueberry, mulberry, red and black cherries. Violet and peony with aeration. Juicy and succulent, sapid and lithe. The finest tannins, the greatest amplitude and the most crystalline core of any of these wines. Very juicy. Accessible already despite the considerable limestone architecture supporting this – rather like the cellar carved from the chalk below. Very shapely and structured on the finish and yet long and lifted. Colin Hay, Drinks Business

Chateau Grand Puy Ducasse, great value

do not miss this! ..  gorgeous. Dark and resonant on the palate, the Grand Vin is endowed with terrific depth from start to finish. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, spice and new leather are all amplified, with a kick of French oak that wraps it all together. Technical Director Anne Le Naour found a way to give the 2024 ample textural richness without distorting the wine. This is impeccably done. Tasted three times. –Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Chateau Giscours , great value

The 2024 Giscours has turned out very well indeed. Offering up incipiently complex aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with orange zest, licorice, violets and burning embers, it's medium to full-bodied, with good density and richness, with a layered, rather muscular palate and a long, expansive finish. The estate retained cover crops to amplify the dry conditions in July and August, accelerating ripening, and once again picked by vine age within blocks. Merlot came in between 19 and 28 September, and the Cabernet Sauvignon was picked very late, between 1 and 11 October. ~ William Kelley, WA

Chateau Langoa Barton Great value

The 2024 Langoa Barton is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet blackberries and plums mingled with notions of licorice, pencil shavings and lilac. Medium to full-bodied, with lively acids and good depth and density, it's pure and refined. This is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, picked between 24 September and 5 October. W. Kelley, WA

Chateau Rauzan Segla

Inky color here, one of the deepest in the appellation, lovely precision, great quality, the cool spirit of the vintage comes through in the sappy fruit, blue rather than black in character if not in color, with black tea, espresso, chalk, lots of finesse, and still delivers flesh through the mid palate, with a touch of bitter cocoa bean on the finish. This is the first organic certified vintage, 55% of production in the main estate wine. Jane Anson, Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux

Chateau Calon Segur

a terrific effort. It unwinds in the glass with notes of plums, cassis and iris mingled with hints of burning embers and incense. Medium to full-bodied, supple and layered, it's suave and seamless, with good depth at the core, powdery tannins and beautifully integrated acids. It's one of the most classically proportioned vintages this estate has produced over the last decade. William Kelley, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Chateau Phelan Segur

Black raspberries, flowers, strawberry, menthol, and cedar aromas fill the perfume. Medium-bodied, bright, crunchy, and crisp, the lively finish readily displays its charming red fruits. This should be quite nice to taste shortly after release. 2027-2045 Jeff Leve, Wine Cellar Insider

Chateau Brane Cantenac pretty good amount

This is tremendous value for a beautiful wine. DO NOT MISS

Tons of energy, stone fruits, cherry pits, damson, a lovely feeling of fruit that has plenty of life ahead it, fresh and juicy with sapidity. not trying too hard just full of pleasure. Edge of grilled campfire, graphite, generosity, easily one of the wines of the vintage.. Jane Anson, Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux

Chateau Meyney

Espresso, black cherries, licorice, tobacco, and floral notes already pop in the nose. On the palate the wine is forward, round, and bright, with loads of currants and a salty edge in the dark, fruity, energetic finish. Drink from 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2027-2045. Jeff Leve, Wine Cellar Insider

Chateau Latour Martillac  WHITE

Pale lemon yellow. Apples, lemons, some citrus, fruit forward nose, elegant and bright. Fresh acidity, fresh, bright, saline, detailed, nuanced, elegant texture, wonderful concentration, long. Gorgeous Latour-Martillac! Blogger from Norway

Christer Byklum, B my Bordeaux—-read his bio, just found his blog—a new voice

Chateau Pontet Canet  a good amount

daring to harvest late paid dividends in this challenging vintage, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, black raspberries and plums mingled with accents of rose petals, licorice and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and integrated, with mid-palate density that's all too rare this year, it's layered, suave and seamless, concluding with a long, sapid finish. Greater reactivity during the season means that Pontet-Canet's vineyards are gaining in vigor ... to deliver what is clearly one of the wines of the vintage. William Kelley, Wine Advocate

Chateau Cos D'Estournel good amount

The 2024 Cos d'Estournel could very well be one of the wines of the vintage. Bright and vibrant in the glass, with tons of energy, the 2024 impresses with its vertical structure, depth and overall balance. Blue/purplish fruit, spice, new leather, lavender and mocha are beautifully delineated throughout. The 2024 is super-classic. The modest 12.8% alcohol is notable, especially because that also means there is less extraction of wood. Cos is one of my early favorites in 2024. Antonio Galloni , Vinous

Chateau Gruaud Larose -Allocated but a good amount

Profound and very beautiful aromatically. Yet slightly introvert and a little closed at first. Damson, blueberry and black berry, black currant and subtle cassis with gentle aeration. Blanched almonds and a little of their creaminess. In the mouth, there’s some Griotte cherry, a hint of peony and maybe lily of the valley too. Succulent and luxurious in its texture. Suave, quite full and ample in frame, this pushes at the cheeks. I love how the fresh juiciness seems to gather at the top of the palate and, with a sensation of greater viscosity, glide down the cheeks like ‘tears’ descending the sides of a glass. Colin Hay, Drinks Business

Chateau Branaire-Ducru 2024—-Large Allocation—-Don't Miss

Another great success from Branaire-Ducru – and it’s release price something of a no Bra(i)n-er (if you’ll excuse the pun). This is very spherical at the core with a dense, fully-charged mid palate. Brambles and damsons and dark plum and assorted stone fruits, a little hint of wild Italian herbs and crushed green peppercorns. There’s an interesting floral note too that I can’t quite pin down to a single descriptor – wisteria doesn’t quite capture it but is the closest I seem to get. Sapid and juicy, long and racy on the finish, with a note of dark chocolate appearing right at the end. Colin Hay, Drinks Business
