"Like the winemaker herself, Simone Adams's wines are really charismatic
and hard to resist." - Stephan Reinhart, Wine Advocate
Last spring’s tasting with Simone Adams was a rousing success. People loved her and her poised, precise interpretations of Burgundian grapes. She is emblematic of a new generation of talented German winemakers who make Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that, in blind tastings, compare favorably to those of the Côte d’Or. Simone has found and exploits some very Burgundian, limestone-rich soils on her estate in Rheinhessen’s Ingelheim.
We’ won't have her, but will taste two whites that offer a lot of value at a reasonable price: her Weissburgunder (i.e., Pinot Blanc) and her lightly orange Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris). Followed by two single-vineyard Chardonnays and two Spatburgunders (Pinot Noirs), these are wines of power, precision, and finesse, and blessedly of moderate alcohols.
White
2025 Ingelheim Weissburgunder
This Pinot Blanc is unwooded, clean and clear. It was the most-ordered at the tasting last spring. Try it instead of your everyday chardonnay.
Vinous “ Smooth yeast and tender white apple flesh already promise texture on the nose, with a touch of lemon and flint. The palate is beautifully fluid and almost spherical, with yeasty richness, yet poised, fresh and precise. Texture is operative and shows all the freshness, fluidity and purity. Very Good Plus
$26.95; Case, $22.95
2025 Grauburgunder
A portion of this had some skin contact, which means that it is only slightly orange but is a savory wine of power and finesse.
Vinous “just a tinge of pink in its pale coppery color. … The nose is all subtle yeast with the merest touch of florality, very tender but also very charming. A well of freshness, a flowing, juicy generosity, seemingly emanating from a wonderful, central, almost zesty core around which a delicious veil of phenolics gathers. There is not an ounce of fat, not a frill, but a whole lot of freshness and beauty.
$26.95; Case, $22.95
2023 Adams Wein Chardonnay Lohpfad
A single vineyard on mid slope. Light on the oak, it is a wine of dimension.
Aroma: Heady and intense, very fine, herbal; Mouth: Clean, fine acid, less wood than the 22, elegant, racy, and full, High-toned acidity over ripe fruit with well-integrated wood;
Very Good-Excellent
Wine Advocate “full-bodied, fresh and intense, generous, saline and lemon-bitter. The long, intense, elegant, stimulating saline and aromatic finish features tropical fruit flavors such as ripe pears, melons, baby pineapples, and lemon rind. Aged in stück and barriques, this rich but elegant and well-balanced wine is an excellent effort."
$48, Case $41
Red
2023 Spatburgunder Ingelheim
This. Her not-so-basic Pinot Noir is the best, most precise and focused Old or New World Pinot that we have tasted anywhere near its price.
Aroma: plummy and heady, nicely rounded and firm; Mouth: juicy, bright rounded fruit, intense, clean acid drive, a racier style of pinot long; Very Good - Excellent
Vinous “This is a most elegant, deep-fruited and profound Pinot Noir. Tart redcurrant shines on the nose with freshness, brightness and overtones of crushed yarrow and white pepper. The palate is equally tender and fruited, but it has a yeasty, supple creaminess that adds a little weight and reinforces the purity, poetry and tenderness of the fruit.”.
$28.99; Case, $24.95
2023 Heerweg Spatburgunder
From vineyards with a thick layer of silt over limestone
Wine Advocate “offers a super fragrant, deep, intense and slightly toasty, spicy nose of dark berries intermingled with saline layers and notes of concentrated and savory cherries as well as black tea. Still a tiny bit reductive on the nose, this is a full-bodied, refined, silky-textured, elegant, round, and juicy but also concentrated Pinot with fine tannins, good intensity, lingering salinity, and a finish that is still bitter and a little astringent but positively grippy. It's very promising. Aeration is recommended”
$53, Case $45

2024 Chardonnay Auf dem Haun
Very limited and rare. The vineyard is at the top of the slope. More new oak here, more depth and complexity, long aging potential. I loved the 2023; the 2024 has just arrived.
Vinous “The tender nose is shy, offering a touch of dried maize and a hint of lemon. The palate is utterly bright and serene, with supple, smooth, buffered freshness against a backdrop of smooth, lemony yeast. This textural element carries salt, freshness and that lovely feeling of deep, deep stone. The lemony brightness redoubles on the finish. This is exquisitely balanced, long and so clear-cut.” Excellent- Outstanding

2023 Spatburgunder Auf dem Haun
Vinous "Superb aroma on the nose sends out red flower petal notes, perhaps of peony, eglantine and a beautiful smattering of white pepper. It is exquisitely aromatic, wonderfully lifted, so floral and tender, yet profound and fresh, with a lovely depth. This is all tone, finesse, scent and poise. Its nature is totally disarming, and the vivid scent is a killer. The 2023 is wonderful, enduring, bright, fine and silky." $70 Net
Wine Advocate “This is a great Pinot Noir from Ingelheim in Rheinhessen. Offers a deep, pure, fresh and saline, intense, remarkably fine and complex nose of red cherries and sweet red berries such as stewed strawberries. This is highly delicate and precise as well as sensual. On the palate, this is a generously round and sweet, very finessed but also intense, concentrated and saline Pinot with fine, savory tannins and a long and warming but precise, mouthwatering and palate-cleansing finish.”
