A good time was had by all, even those who had to leave before Arnaud Couly's arrival. The wines were that good. He was even better . Each of the red cuvees, rather than being graded in terms of steps of quality, highlight the soil character of their sites, whether single vineyard or blend. The Crescendo, the oldest of the vines on the Clos d'Echo vineyard that get extra oak aging, is deemed to be a step up in quality.
The Chinon Rene Couly 2005 comes from sandy, clay soils neaer the river bank, and was slightly lighter and finer than the wines that followed. The Chinon la Baronnie 2005 is from clay and limestone soil on the plateau and is richer and fuller. It was a favorite among the tasters.
The Clos d'Echo was more substantial still, with great richness and depth from its 2003 vintage., and the Crescendo a greater richer denser wine that is fully worth its price.
Of special note were the 2006 Chanteaux, a white all Chenin blanc from a stripe of chalky soil in Chinon, and a Rosé of Cabernet Franc that was lovely.
