New Zealand Wines: Twelfth Night, Plus Two

Len writes, "Those who braved last week's wind and rain were treated to a a straightforward, low-key and detailed presentation by Beth Ann Dahan, who owns 'Twelfth Night' with her husband and a partner. Many were tasting wines from New Zealand's southern Central Otago region for the first time.

Len continues,

Beth Ann explained that it was on the same latitude in the southern hemisphere as Burgundy is in the northern, and, like Burgundy, has a continental climate. People remarked how her 2013 Pinot Noir resembled some red burgundies in its earth and spice with darker fruit like riper vintage burgundy.

Two other wines were noted more. The 2016 Rose Pinot Noir prompted the most requests for a second taste and was the most ordered wine. Round, fruity and with some depth, it was a rose for all seasons. Although sold out until next week, it will certainly be on our shelf and might be a good Thanksgiving wine.

The Riesling also benefitted from Otago's cooler climate. Dry and fruity, it showed less of the diesel than in my notes below and was a taster’s favorite. The Sauvignon Blanc was more complex and citrusy than most New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. It is better than its 13.99 price.

People liked both the deeper 2016 Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc Taylor's Pass  and the 2016 Craggy Range Pinot Noir, the latter from North Island's warmer Martinborough region, but they were without the benefit of a personable principal present, and thus were more background to the other wines.

Beth Ann told me a charming story of the brand name origin. On the twelfth night of their exploratory trip to New Zealand, they went up to a mountaintop observatory to view the panorama of the southern heavens (should you go to New Zealand don't miss the chance to get away from urban light to experience it). The next day fate found them their vineyard.
