This Week's Tasting

Tasty Weekday Wines
June 7, 2017

Six well-priced wines this week, for the patio, the pool, the grill, or just sipping.

We loved the  2016 Daguet  Sauvignon Blanc. It comes from an estate near the Cotes de Duras just southeast of Bordeaux, but there is nothing Bordelais in its pretty delicacy. Lightly citric and fresh, it's is great for just sipping or with more delicate fish or chicken on a hot day.

Domaine Laballe makes fine Armagnac, but they also make some very nice and inexpensive gascon table wines. they grow Gros Manseng, Sauvignon, Colombard, and Chardonnay on their Sables Fauves, "wild sands" soils. The wine is full with the aromatic herbs of Gascony. Drink by itself or with seafood or white meats.

Picoul, the name means lip-stinger from the bad old days before global waming and wine technology, is grown in Provence. Nowadays some versions are decidedly bland. Not so this zesty intense, full-bodied version. The 2015 Felines Jourdan Picpoul de Pinet is great with marinated fish on the grill or salads.

Stephane Aviron makes some of our favorite Beaujolais Crus. In the ripe 2015 vintage, his simple Beaujolais Villages is classic, fruity and forward, It is delightful on its own, maybe lightly chilled on warm day. Drink with white meats or grilled fish

Massaria Li Veli leads the vanguard for the return to high quality wines from Puglia. They produce standard traditional offerings of great value. The 2015 Li Veli Primonero is an equal blend of Primitivo and Negroamaro that gives us a full bodied, balanced and spicy red. This is great red for BBQ, it also plays well with good pizza.

2015 is a great Bordeaux vintage, with many of the earlier drinking wines starting to arrive. Case in point, the 2015 Ch. Memoires, a rich and fleshy full and round, mostly Merlot blend. It is very satisfying with most red meats, even grilled.
