This Week's Tasting

BBQ II; The Italians
August 22, 2018

Peter writes, "When we grill outdoors there is a reasonably good chance that some food will show up on the table. It is also true that Italian wines are great with food. So tonight we are doing an Italian BBQ tasting.""

Grilled Oysters

He continues,

Just in case you do some grilled oysters we are starting with two distinctive whites. The 2014 Garofoli Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Podium from Marche is a classic example of this type. It is just fine young and ages beautifully. The wine is a balanced combination of multi layered yellow fruits, herbs, citrus and almond. The 2009 Colombera Timorosso Il Montino is almost ten years old now and just coming into its own. Timorosso is a grape variety of great character still being grown in Piedmont by a few dedicated growers. This wine has great depth with white flowers, stone fruit and intense minerality.

We will begin the reds with the 2013 Buglioni Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso. Valpolicella Ripasso is one of the most versatile wines with food and this can be served with everything from chicken to ribs. The 2016 G D Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo will be next. The Vajras make this as a pure expression of Nebbiolo with beautiful cherry, strawberry and spice with natural structure and smooth tannin.

Pagliarese is a revived ancient property in Tuscany. It is now owned by Felsina . The 2015 Pagliarese Chianti Classico Riserva is a beautiful expression of Sangiovese, rich and polished. Steak anyone? We will finish with the 2015 Le Terrazze Rosso Conero Riserva Sassi Neri. Here the grape is Montepulciano and this wine is also rich and polished.

This should be fun.
