2015 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso

The Grand Crus of Sicily
July 11, 2017

Vineyard

Today’s offer contains the six new releases from Tenuta delle Terre Nere. Terre Nere sits high up on Mount Etna in Sicily and has been the leading producer of profound Etna reds made with Nerello Mascalese grapes. Over the past ten years or so, Mount Etna has been the hottest new source for great wines with countless articles and reviews. We were the first to sell Tenuta delle Terre Nere in America and have continued ever since.

Now owner Marco di Grazia is taking a slightly different tactic. He now refers to three of his vineyards as Etna Premier Cru and to the other three as Etna Grand Cru. This is not really surprising since he thinks of the Etna vineyards in the same way he thinks of vineyards in Burgundy and can easily claim that his wines are at the same quality level.

Feudo di Mezzo is the largest of the Premier Cru and the winery only farms the best section within the vineyard called Il Quadro delle Rose. The soil is volcanic ash and basalt pebbles. The 2015 Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro delle Rose displays dusky autumnal tones and a spicy cedary bouquet with silky tannins. Santo Spirito is also high in volcanic ash content and has gentle wide terraces. The 2015 Santo Spirito has a rich fleshy bouquet and sophisticated balance and purity.  It has a nice open personality. Guardiola is the other Premier Cru and is both the highest elevation and the most difficult to work. The slopes are steep and craggy with layers of volcanic sand, ash and basalt. The 2015 Guardiola has focused intensity and a powerful character. Guardiola is always the wine that takes the most time to open up.

Now we pop over to the Grand Crus.  Calderara Sottano, San Lorenzo and Prephylloxera have one thing in common. 60,000 years ago lava starting forming terroir out of the Ellittico eruption center. Of the hundreds of vineyards on Etna only these three in Randazzo are 100% Ellittico terroir. Calderara Sottano and the Prephyloxxera site within it are the stoniest of the crus. It is remarkable to see the fist sized black pumice cover the ground. The 2015 Calderara Sottano has a wide panoramic spectrum of aromas and flavors. Floral, spicy, leathery and aromatic with a creamy texture. The same description would apply to the 2015 Prephylloxera. Made from vines that are over 130 years old, this wine adds a sense of measured elegance and understated authority and is truly special. The San Lorenzo vineyard while close to Calderara, is mainly Ellittico volcanic sand with some pumice. A new label for Terre Nere, the 2015 San Lorenzo is a wine with rich fruit and silky tannins and a velvety, voluptuous character.

All of the vines that make these wines are at least 50 years old and are high elevation. The wines are the result of a long growing season ensuring phenolic maturity. They all age effortlessly and have real complexity. In other words these are great wines.
