2014 Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Oncle Vincent

"Puligny" at less than $25 a bottle
October 24, 2016

Oncle Vincent

Puligny Montrachet is the most elegant and aristocratic of the three great Cote de Beaune whites. With more limestone than Chassagne or Meursault, its wines have an elegance and breed , a power and finesse that distinguish it from these communes.

But aristocracy comes at a price. Nowadays You can rarely fined good villageĀ  Puligny at less than $60 a bottle, Some sell for as much as $85.

Maison Olivier Leflaive is known for its pleasing and approachable white burgundies which run the gamut from simple bourgogne to grand crus inherited from the Famous Leflaive estate. Their delicious Bourgogne Les Setilles has been one of our customer favorites here for almost two decades.

I recently was blown away by tasting a relatively new wine from them. Although labeled Bourgogne, it is an estate wine exclusively from a selection of small parcels in Puligny but further down the slope than allowed for the Puligny appelation. They age it in oak and lightly fine it to preserve its richness.

Alan Meadows wrote of this wine:

"a trace of matchstick character to the otherwise ripe and fresh aromas of pear and apple that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The middle weight and solidly concentrated flavors possess a beguiling mouth feel as well as good balance on the reasonably complex and persistent finish. This offers good quality for its level and could easily be enjoyed immediately."

I tasted it with more bottle development than he had. The matchstick note had disappeared. It had become a delicious drink.

The 2014 Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Oncle Vincent has the flavors if not the weight of a village Puligny. Graceful and fleshy, its refinement is enhanced by a judicious application of new oak,. This is a great value for the money. If you love Puligny, you'll like this. if you like Setilles, you'll love it. Small production, limited quantities.
