2005 Penafiel Vendimia Seleccionada Ribera del Duero
Bodegas Hijos de Antonio Polo

Antonio Polo owned some prime vineyards in Penafiel, the heart of Ribera del Duero. In 1999 he decided to stop selling his grapes to other producers and began to make his own wines in his Bodegas Hijos de Antonio Polo. He dedicated grapes from his oldest 70-year-old vines, formerly reserved for Vega Sicilia, to his top reserve wine Vendimia Seleccionada.
Ribera del Duero is a mountainous region that produces the greatest wines of Spain. The grape variety is Tempranillo, locally called Tinto Fino. Structured like Bordeaux or Cabernet Sauvignon, the wines range from the everyday table variety to the profound and complex.
The 2005 Penafiel Vendimia Seleccionada Ribera del Duero is one of the best, a wine of stunning character. It compares favorably with other Ribera del Dueros that sell for more than twice the price, even more in the case of Vega Sicilia. DecanterMagazine awarded it five stars, their highest possible rating.
2005 is a great vintage in northern Spain. The 2005 Vendimia Seleccionada is indeed among the best. Total production is only 100 cases. You can drink it now or place it in your cellar for 10 or 15 years.
